Snow.

March 26, 2013

Snow was the theme of the weekend. It started coming down heavily on Friday, meaning that our second visit to Wem’s USC was fairly bereft of people. Fortunately this always means we can make our performance that much more personal and the few hardy travellers who came along made a great audience. We used the opportunity to bring out Scratchy, our new washboard for a few new songs. We’ll be trying this out over the coming few gigs, but it seems like a keeper.

The build up to the gig itself was fun for us for another reason. Before the band plays, they hold a pub quiz. We agreed that we were good at quizzes as long as we knew the answers, so we decided to see if we knew any…

As it happens, we did. We were doing well right up until the final round, with two or three other teams close to us on points – it was all down to the final round…

The subject…?

THE SIMPSONS!!!

WeeMann proved his encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject, even gaining bonus points in a tie break question. We won, although it was a close battle.

Woo Hoo!

Woo Hoo!

On Sunday afternoon we received a call from Sam, landlord of The Wrekin Inn, to see if we wanted to cancel, as the snow was likely to keep people away. Our attitude was that we may as well come along and if no-one turned up, we’d just have a rehearsal. We needn’t have worried, a good crowd turned up and we tried a completely ad-hoc set, randomizing the song order and pulling out songs we don’t play too often, giving members of the audience “Good” Bad” and “OK” cards, with which to rate our performances. I doubt there’s any need to detail which card got used most, although none of us remembers creating the ones that said “Sh*t” and “Crap.”

The Band and Scratchy

Of all the gigs we’ve played, this crowd most got into the whole duck throwing thing. The air above our heads was like a sea of yellow for most of the afternoon, with certain people being too good a shot for our liking…

A final word goes out to the ducknappers:

We Will Hunt You Down

We Will Hunt You Down

This Friday we’re back to Shrewsbury’s Old Post Office before a weekend break for Easter.

See you on the other side!

So, So Tired…

March 20, 2013

Hi, it’s Hugo here, the band’s Gnome Stool and star of the show. I’ve been asked to write this week’s blog, so here goes…

Well, that was a big weekend. It all started on Thursday with a gig for a headteachers’ association shindig just outside Shrewsbury. A crowd of off-duty headteachers relaxing after the first day of a residential course made for a good crowd which included the headteachers from both Clatter and WeeMann’s children’s schools – the latter also being WeeMann’s wife’s boss – we had to be a little careful… A drowned Scruffy was thrown rearward towards the band for the first time in many months.

On Friday we played our first gig at Bridgnorth’s Hen & Chickens, a venue which has been going from strength to strength over the last few months. The audience, including local celebs SheBangg, were great and we look forward to our return in June.

Saturday was a special as part of a fund raiser for the Newport Rugby Club and we arrived just as the England Wales game was coming to an end on the TV. It seems WeeMann was in the minority in celebrating the 30-3 massacre. The stitches come out next week.

The highlight of an already great weekend, hoiwever, was our Sunday afternoon slot at The Telegraph. Already a favourite venue of ours, this gig surpassed our previous visits with a packed pub celebrating St Patricks Day and taking the opportunity to see off a pub regular, Dinky, who sadly passed on last week. Our sincerest condolences to all who knew her, it’s clear that she was deeply loved by everyone whose lives she touched.

The Washboard Arrives

The Washboard Arrives

The gig saw the début of the band’s new instrument, the washboard. New tracks are being worked into the set to take advantage of the fact that we can bring Clatter to the front of the stage and a few of these will be premièred later this week.

On Friday we’re returning to Wem’s USC and Sunday sees us back at our spiritual home, The Wrekin Inn in Wellington.

See you soon!

Love and bubbles,

Hugo.

Back Into The Groove

March 10, 2013

After such a busy end to 2012, the first couple of months have been a little quiet in Plotland. January kept us ticking over, but we throttled back in February in the run up to our First Birthday Party. Edcase then popped over to Denmark for a few gigs with his old friend and co-conspirator in Rumpus, Martin Dale and Clatter has been providing sound engineering duties for a gymnastics competition in Reading. WeeMann sat at home alone and sad as his friends deserted him.

In amongst this, however, we popped up to Stone in Staffordshire to play at The Swan Inn, a pub that both Edcase and Clatter have played at previously, but this was the first visit for LTP. The gig went well, but some sad news came off the back of it – one of our beloved ducks was kidnapped. We didn’t realise until a few days later, when Ed had a letter pushed through his letterbox:

Ducknapping!

Ducknapping!

At the time of writing, we are still awaiting further developments. If anyone has any news on the whereabouts of Fuzzy, please contact us here. Me miss our duck greatly.

In other news, Hugo has been locked away in Clatter’s drum studio while he was away and has retaliated by getting a song dedicated to the band on local radio station Radio Nova. Carly played Road To Nowhere for the band as, according to Hugo, that’s where we’re headed.

Scruffy, our stunt dog, has agreed to come back to work. You may have read elsewhere that he was refusing to continue until we agreed to use warm water during the drowning sequence and allow him use of the band snorkel. We’ve reached an agreement which sees him return to the fold and would like to thank Toby for stepping into the breach for a couple of gigs.

We start again in earnest this week with four, count ’em – 4, gigs. On Thursday we’re in Albrighton (not that one) as the entertainment for a Headmasters’ Jolly, then on Friday we’re heading to The Hen & Chickens in Bridgnorth for our first appearance there. On Saturday it’s a fundraiser at Newport’s Rugby Club before we return to one of our favourites, The Telegraph in Castlefields, Shrewsbury on Sunday afternoon. Details for all these gigs can be found on our gig page.

Monday will see us all falling asleep at our desks, this being particularly treacherous for WeeMann in his guise as a driving instructor.

Finally, we’ve set up a Lost The Plot Dropbox account, so if you have any photos or video of the band you’d like to share with us and the world, please message us with your Dropbox e-mail address and we’ll share a folder with you so you can upload them. Alternatively, share a folder with us using info@losttheplotband.co.uk and we’ll get it that way.

We’re particularly interested in material from our birthday party at the moment, so anything you have that you’re happy to go on our site, please get in touch.

See you all soon.
